Andrographis veilig combineren met reguliere medicatie

Andrographis paniculata, ofwel Indiase gentiaan, is een geneeskrachtige plant uit Zuid-Azië en staat bekend als 'koning der bitterheid'. De plant wordt erkend in traditionele geneeswijzen, zoals ayurveda en traditionele Chinese geneeskunde, en wordt heden ten dage wereldwijd gekweekt. Andrographis is rijk aan bioactieve diterpenoïden, zoals andrographolide, en vertoont antipyretische, analgetische, antivirale en immuunmodulerende effecten. Recente studies onderstrepen bovendien zijn potentieel in de behandeling van respiratoire aandoeningen, waaronder COVID-19. Niettemin vereisen interacties met reguliere medicatie en mogelijke bijwerkingen zoals gastro-intestinale stoornissen voorzichtigheid, vooral bij langdurig gebruik.

De bioactieve terpenoïden uit Andrographis paniculata, die verantwoordelijk zijn voor zijn farmacologische activiteiten, worden voornamelijk gewonnen uit de bladeren en wortels van de plant.³ De bioactieve stof andrographolide heeft bewezen antivirale en immuunmodulerende effecten.⁴ We bespreken deze diverse effecten aan de hand van vaak recente onderzoeken. Zo hebben studies aangetoond dat andrographolide bij ontstekingsprocessen werkt door de inhibitie van NFkB, een cruciale transcriptiefactor in de ontstekingsreactie.² Een recente studie onderzocht bovendien het potentieel van andrographis als aanvullende behandeling bij COVID-19. Hieruit bleek dat de terpenoïden significant werkzaam waren tegen COVID-19 en gerelateerde complicaties.⁵ Een ander dubbelblind, placebo-gecontroleerd onderzoek toonde aan dat patiënten sneller herstelden van verkoudheidssymptomen dan die in de placebogroep. Dit ondersteunt het traditionele gebruik van andrographis in het bestrijden van luchtweginfecties.⁶

Andrographis staat ook bekend om zijn krachtige immuunstimulerende effecten. Onderzoek wijst op een toename van antilichaamactiviteit en verbeterde fagocytose door macrofagen.⁷ Verder stabiliseert het mestcellen, wat bijdraagt aan zijn anti-allergische eigenschappen.^8,9 Het effect van andrographis werd eveneens bevestigd op collitis in een zeer recente studie uit 2024: andrographis verlichtte colitis en bevorderde bovendien de reparatie van de darmmucosa.¹⁰ Een review uit 2020 laat zien dat andrographis eveneens effectief is bij de behandeling van bacteriële infecties. Andrographis heeft een antibacteriële werking tegen een breed scala aan bacteriën door remming van pathogene factoren van bacteriën en het reguleren van de immuunrespons om infectieuze ontsteking te verminderen. Gezien de toenemende antibioticaresistentie wordt andrographis dan ook gezien als een veelbelovende kandidaat voor de ontwikkeling van nieuwe antibacteriële medicijnen.¹¹
